Watch the 2022 HS Short Films
Electives at The Sharon Academy high school are an opportunity for deeper learning outside the scope of core classes. They provide students with creative, leadership, and project management skills, as well as the chance to engage with teachers and fellow students in different settings and with a different dynamic. Learn more.
During the filmmaking elective students learn various concepts and techniques on how to craft a short film from conception to completion. In-class work focuses on writing, storytelling, scene-building, production, acting, shot composition and editing. Students use these tools to create their own short films during the latter weeks of the elective. It is an immersive experience as the students apply their new-found knowledge to their creative vision and with minimal adult support spearhead the production themselves. The students learn first-hand how many factors go into filmmaking and just how complex and intricate it can be. As each film is a genuine representation of its creator the final products are typically vastly different.
The 2022 body of work was presented to the school on Friday, March 11, to great acclaim. Elective teacher Blake Fabrikant compiled the films into a single 52-minute video. Watch it here. “I was very impressed by the final films and the vast range of attributes that they display,” commented Blake, “everything from creative and clever, humorous and suspenseful, relatable and ridiculous, entertaining and heart-warming, to everything in-between.”
