Beware of Lice

Live lice are very difficult to detect as they are translucent and can blend into the hair color.

Indications of lice include itching (especially at night) and reddened areas on the back of the neck or behind the ears as this is the warmest part of the head and the place where lice like to lay their eggs. The eggs (nits) appear as white specks on the hair strands. Nits should be removed – by hand/fingers or with special combs – on a daily basis until gone. Recheck daily to ensure no more are found.

The American Pediatric Association and National School Nurses Association recommend that students stay home from school for live lice until lice are treated and dead. The American Pediatric Association and National School Nurses Association do not recommend students staying home due to nits.

If your student does contract lice, please know that this has no bearing on a person’s health practices or cleanliness.

If lice are found, we will do everything we can here at TSA to keep this information confidential and can offer a lice-zapping comb. To borrow this unit, please contact Jen Tewksbury at the high school, Janice Stumpf at the Middle School, or call (802) 763-2500.
