Academics at TSA Middle School

At The Sharon Academy Middle School (grades 7–8), students are known, valued, and challenged. With intentionally designed small class sizes (9-15 students), passionate teachers, and an innovative integrated curriculum, TSA creates a dynamic learning environment where students are empowered to discover who they are, what they believe, and how they can make a difference.

Where Every Student is Known

Our small class sizes foster strong student-teacher relationships. Mixed-age groupings and regular reshuffling of class rosters reinforce a strong sense of community, ensuring that every student feels connected, supported, and seen. Each student is paired with a dedicated advisor who supports their academic progress and social-emotional development; advisory groups meet every other week.

A Place Where Students Are Valued

TSA places a strong emphasis on compassion, cooperation, and respect—values woven into daily life. We manifest this environment through a variety of programs designed to support students’ academic, social, and emotional growth.

Study All, held twice each week in small-group settings, blends guided study halls with discussions on topics such as study skills, executive functioning, sex education, and substance use awareness. ESP Class (Emotional, Social, Physical) encourages movement, mindfulness, and wellness through activities like yoga, archery, fitness goal-setting, and team-building. Personalized Learning Plans (PLPs) guide students in reflecting on their goals, strengths, and growth, serving as both a portfolio of their best academic work and a tool for meaningful conversations at student-led conferences. Our regular Weekly Community Meetings provide time to build relationships, resolve conflicts, and shape school culture through shared planning and cooperative activities.

A Curriculum That Challenges

TSA’s hallmark Integrated Curriculum uses a two-year thematic cycle (Year A and Year B) that explores essential questions:

Who am I?
What do I believe?
What are my responsibilities?
How can I make a difference?

Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and Art are woven together in interdisciplinary units that promote deeper understanding. Rather than learning in isolated subjects, students examine real-world themes such as Human Rights, Energy, Belief Systems, and Food Justice from multiple angles—connecting literature to science, history to art, and theory to action.

Mathematics, while taught separately from the integrated themes, is equally personalized and rigorous. Students are grouped by skill level into four or five math sections and may progress through the 7th and 8th grade curriculum at their own pace. Many students advance to Algebra I by 8th grade. Because all math classes are taught at the same time, students can move between levels as needed—ensuring challenge without disrupting their overall schedule.

Signature Learning Experiences

Middle School Circus

TSA’s annual two-week circus residency is a joyful, all-school event that fosters risk-taking, creativity, and collaboration. Under the guidance of a visiting circus performer, students learn juggling, clowning, unicycling, and more—culminating in a performance for over 600 community members.

Science Fair

Each spring, students spend six weeks researching, designing, and conducting original experiments, presenting their findings at TSA’s Science Fair. From hypothesis to public presentation, students engage in the full scientific process, building confidence and communication skills.

Winter Ski Program

During ski season, we do what Vermonters do best: hit the slopes.

Hulbert Outdoor Leadership Experience

Each spring, Middle School students head to the Hulbert Outdoor Center in Fairlee, VT for a three-day overnight adventure that blends leadership development, community building, and personal growth.

8th Grade Graduation Speeches

As a capstone to their middle school journey, each student writes and delivers a speech reflecting on their growth and experience. It’s a powerful celebration of voice, courage, and transformation.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Whether analyzing the biodiversity of local forests or debating global refugee policies, TSA students are encouraged to see the connections between themselves, their communities, and the wider world.

With 40 minutes of recess daily, dedicated seasonal ski days, all-school hikes, and active ESP classes, students stay moving and grounded. Afterschool sports include soccer, basketball,, track, and Ultimate frisbee.

We walk our talk: recycling, composting, landfill visits, and integrating environmental themes into curriculum. Every student is expected to complete 20 hours of community service to develop a sense of community belonging.

Depending on interest each year, TSA students build confidence through participation in:

  • MathCounts
  • Dungeons and Dragons
  • Destination Imagination
  • Jr. Iron Chef & Cooking Club

Learning That Lasts

Transferable Skills

Students hone critical thinking, creative problem solving, research, public speaking, and writing across all subjects.

Demonstration of Mastery

Learning is assessed through essays, art, experiments, debates, and performances—not just tests.

Student Voice

Every 8th grader delivers a graduation speech reflecting on their personal growth and learning journey.

Outdoor and Experiential Learning:

Frequent field trips, a spring leadership retreat, hiking Mt. Cardigan, and winter ski afternoons bring the curriculum to life.
